Sedation Dentistry

With safe, effective sedation dentistry, Drs. Schamback and Schwartz are able to supply a relaxing experience that allows even the most anxious patient to feel comfortable during his or her procedure at Great Smile Dental. We understand the each individual is different, with unique needs when it comes to sedation and anxiety, which is why we offer both oral and IV sedation. This allows you to choose the level of sedation that is right for you.

Dr. Schamback and Dr. Schwartz both received post-graduate training and certification in IV sedation dentistry. Dr. Schamback’s training included a general practice residency with a month-long anesthesia rotation. Both dentists received additional training and qualification from the Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation (DOCS).

Types of Sedation

Oral Sedation

Mild oral sedation can be used if you have mild anxiety or require longer procedures that are more complex. Drs. Schamback and Schwartz administer mild sedation orally in the form of a prescription pill taken prior to your arrival at our Port St. Lucie dental office. You remain awake or very sleepy throughout the entire procedure and are able to breathe on your own, but you will feel a great sense of relaxation.

IV Sedation

Dr. Schamback and Dr. Schwartz have certificates from the state of Florida for administering moderate conscious sedation. At this level, you are not truly asleep, but you are extremely relaxed and comfortable and are unlikely to remember what happened during your dental appointment.

You will feel the effects of IV sedation quickly and your vital signs will be monitored throughout the procedure. You will still be conscious, but the sights, sounds, and sensations of dental treatment that might ordinarily alarm you will not create any anxiety, and there is a good chance you won’t remember anything that happened during your appointment. With this level of sedation, Dr. Schamback and Dr. Schwartz are able to provide quality care and accomplish more than they normally would for anxious patients.

Post-Sedation Care

If you undergo oral sedation or IV sedation, we recommend having a parent, spouse, or friend accompany you to your appointment, as it can take several hours for the sedative to wear off and it will be unsafe for you to drive. Don’t be surprised if you don’t remember anything about your appointment.
